The infected blood scandal led to more than 30,000 NHS patients receiving contaminated blood, resulting in the deaths of at least 3000 people.

In Norwich, many who have been waiting for justice have died. This exacerbates the awful nature of this shameful episode. Given that on average, a victim dies every 4 days, it is clear that warm words will not be enough.

I have long been campaigning for justice for the victims of the infected blood scandal. These are some of the things I’ve been doing to make sure that those affected achieve justice.

  • After attending the Prime Minister’s statement on the Infected Blood Inquiry, I wrote a statement highlighting that this government ignored the interim recommendations made by the inquiry.
  • Read my statement here.
  • In the following statement on the Infected Blood Compensation Scheme, I told the Paymaster General that my constituent, Steve Bartram, a victim of the scandal, still feels anxious about the Government’s ability to follow through on their promises, despite the Prime Minister’s statement.

December 2023

  • After tireless campaigning from all those demanding justice, one of the amendments I had added my support to, New Clause 27, had passed. This put into law that a body should be established to pay compensation to those infected and affected by the contaminated blood scandal.
  • Following the amendment’s success, I met two of my constituents who had been campaigning for justice outside 10 Downing Street. I listened to their stories, as they told me how they had been affected by the scandal.
  • You can read about their stories here.
  • This is Steve Bartram, a constituent of mine and victim of the scandal.
  • This is Ben, also a constituent of mine. His mother was affected by the infected blood scandal.

    November 2023

    • Following a series of amendments to the Victims and Prisoners Bill, I joined over 100 cross-party MPs in adding my support.
    • In line with the recommendations of the Infected Blood Inquiry, these amendments looked to ramp up action for those affected by establishing an Arms Length Body to administer final compensation payments.

      June 2023

      • I wrote a letter to the Minister for the Cabinet Office and Paymaster General, where I asked the Government to give a specific date for when the system of compensation will be in place for victims of the infected blood scandal.
      • You can read the letter below.

      April 2016

      • I contributed to the debate in Parliament on contaminated blood. During the debate I raised comments from my constituent, Steve Bartram who said that the compensation offer on the table was “paltry and demeaning”.
