I have joined a cross-party group of 50 Parliamentarians in writing to the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, urging him to take action to re-establish the UK as a climate leader.
The letter from the All-Party Parliamentary Group calls on the Prime Minister to do the following:
- Live up to the promise made at COP28 “to transition away from fossil fuels” by ending the government’s approach of “maxing out” North Sea oil and gas.
- Secure UK membership of the Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance ahead of COP29.
- Support the setting of an ambitious New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) and meet existing climate finance commitments.
- Release an ambitious, coordinated and well-resourced UK National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) ahead of the Convention on Biological Diversity COP16.
- Appoint a Secretary of State-level Climate Envoy ahead of COP29.
The Government must show leadership and champion ambitious outcomes at the global level, whilst also working to restore the cross-party consensus at home that has underpinned so many of the UK’s climate, energy and environmental achievements.
If we are to secure success in future international negotiations, the Prime Minister must ensure that these demands are met.
